Before writing your application, please read through this guideline on how to write a good research application.

Applicants need to hold a degree that makes them eligible for a doctoral or Postdoc position or finish their studies within the next six months.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background and work experience in environmental geosciences, nanogeosciences, pollutant dynamics, isotope geochemistry, biogeochemistry environmental chemical analytics, or hydrogeology/ groundwater modelling.

If interested, please apply by sending a single PDF file including a one-page cover letter that describes your motivation for application, the group you are interested to work with, your detailed CV, a brief statement of technical skills, research experiences and interests, and contact information for at least two academic referees to

EDGE seeks to solve pressing environmental problems of today and tomorrow through research, education, and public outreach. We are driven by the desire to understand the complexity of the environmental systems and to communicate our cutting-edge science to inform the public, industry, and politics. EDGE is part of the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science and has active collaborations with various international and national research groups which offers excellent and easily accessible research opportunities.

We are an ambitious team of researchers that aim to conduct environmental systems research and training at the forefront of science. The main research topics at EDGE include nanogeosciences, pollutant dynamics, isotope geochemistry, biogeochemistry, environmental chemical analytics, and modern hydrogeology. EDGE takes an interdisciplinary approach to investigate aquatic and terrestrial processes that control the environment. Chemical, physical, biological, and geoscientific concepts and methods are applied in all research practices: starting from field observations and experimental work to arrive at a molecular scale mechanistic understanding and quantitative modelling.

The research and mentoring philosophy at EDGE strongly encourage collaboration and discussions among EDGE members and with other research groups. We do not regard research progress as complying to a fixed set of rules, but as a dynamic process propelled through reasoned argument and discussion.

From young & dynamic to established & experienced - the EDGE team has it all.

A fundamental goal of graduate and postgraduate research training at EDGE is producing independent ideas-led scientists. Your time at EDGE should thus be a guide to independence.

  • Regular research meetings with all EDGE Hofmann or Krämer group members ensure vital opportunities for scientific exchange and discussion.
  • We will support you at all stages of writing, submitting, and revising scientific publications. A successful PhD will typically have published excellent manuscripts in the best international, peer-reviewed journals.
  • PhD students are members of the Doctoral School in Microbiology and Environmental Science.
  • We will help you in project development and chaperone you during your endeavor to raise own funds at latter stages of the PhD or Postdoc program.
  • We will promote your networking in the scientific community by enabling collaborations with international institutes and by supporting travel to international conferences.
  • We run and you are part of the Environmental Research Network, a network connecting more than 200 scientists from the University of Vienna from all disciplines, from Philosophy, Politics or Social Sciences to Economy and the Natural Sciences.

Success in academia or industry requires more than technological skills. Being a scientist at EDGE provides ample opportunities to develop your communication and writing abilities and other transferable skills.

And last but not least...besides all the work and science, we also like to have a good time!

This is not mandatory for application to the PhD & Postdoc program, but we strongly encourage excellent candidates to look for external funding opportunities as shown but not limited to the options below. A personal stipend gives you additional independence by allocating your own research budget and travel funds. We will assist you to develop a joint research project and to apply for your own grant. Please indicate in your application for which stipends you would be eligible to apply and what would be the next deadline of application (check out the call information of the individual stipend options).
