New Publication in Marine Pollution Bulletin Finds Tire-Derived Compounds, Phthalates, and Trace Metals in the Kiel Fjord

24.01.2025

Concerns about pollutants in the environment are increasing, with substances such as plastic additives drawing particular concern due to their potential harmful effects on organisms. This study with contributions by several EDGE members presents current levels of several phthalates, tire-derived compounds and heavy metals in the Kiel Fjord.

While the outer fjord showed minimal contamination, the inner fjord exhibited alarming concentrations, particularly near Laboe and in deeper sediment layers at Wik. Phthalates were most concentrated near Laboe, with elevated levels also found near Kiel city and the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal. The findings underscore the substantial human impact on the fjord and the potential health risks to aquatic life.
