New publication in Science of the Total Environment: Stormwater management in urban areas using dry gallery infiltration systems

Extreme precipitation events due to climate change will be more frequent. Surface sealing by grey infrastructure additionally hinders the infiltration of heavy rain events into the subsoil. This leads to the pressing question how to manage stormwater events, which might also open new avenues in areas with water shortages, for example on dry islands like the Canaries in Spain. In our recent publication we show opportunities how to use stormwater events for replenishing subsurface water resources and increase water availability during dry seasons using dry gallery; a vertical well connected to a horizontal gallery dug into highly permeable layers. The results of this work are published in the Science of the Total Environment help providing guidelines for its design and installation.
