Welcome New Group Member: Patrick Schacksen
Patrick Skov Schacksen joined EDGE as a postdoctoral researcher in October 2025. His research, supervised by Michael Zumstein and in collaboration with Petra Pjevac, focuses on the functional characterisation and gene expression dynamics of microbiomes in wastewater and freshwater systems associated with the biodegradation of water-soluble polymers.
Patrick received his Ph.D. in biotechnology (specialisation in genomics and bioinformatic research) from Aalborg University (AAU) in 2025. His doctoral research at the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience focused on analysing complex microbial communities involved in nitrous oxide reduction in managed ecosystems. During his Ph.D., he advanced the application of Oxford Nanopore sequencing technologies to enhance understanding of these specialised microbial communities. He obtained both his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in biotechnology at AAU and has previously worked as a gymnasium teacher in Denmark.
