Picture of calm Danube river water, a tree sticks out of the water. At the top of the rim you can still see the beginning of the shoreline with houses, evening atmosphere.

The Global Monitoring Consortium, involving EDGE members, has received the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Award 2022 in the category “International Collaboration of the Year”. The project, led by the University of York, is a truly global collaboration linking 87 researchers from around the world. As part of the collaboration, the participating scientists have studied more than 127 river basins in 104 countries and on all continents tracing residues of 61 pharmaceuticals. It is the largest study of its kind worldwide. Results from the study were already published in the journal PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) in February this year.

Currently, the team headed by Thilo Hofmann is working alongside the colleagues from the University of York on the largest European study investigating the pollution of rivers and streams. The study is scheduled to be completed in summer 2023.
